Many of the women know first-hand how difficult this journey is because they have personally experienced this diagnosis at one point in their lives as well. “We are dedicated to help others impacted by breast cancer,” says Joni Rubin, Thriving Pink board chair. “We believe in community partnerships and welcome everyone to join our Pink Team. < Back ‘Pinktober’ events throughout Yolo County to support Thriving Pink and breast cancer awareness Robyn Dobson Oct 4, 2023 October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and local organization Thriving Pink is hosting a host of events to support the community and raise awareness. Thriving Pink is a nonprofit, volunteer-driven organization that aims to support and serve those in Yolo County impacted by breast cancer by providing a network of support and resources. “Breast cancer impacts all of us, our families, friends, neighbors and co-workers, and we all need to be aware of this disease, our individual risks, what we can do to reduce our risks and resources available for support,” said Joni Rubin, Thriving Pink board chair. “Awareness is the key to early detection and treatment.” Founded in 2016, Thriving Pink has been a longtime advocate of local breast cancer patients and survivors through their tireless work to provide programs, workshops, renewal retreats and financial grants through their Granting Pink program. Throughout “Pinktober,” community members interested in supporting the organization or those a part of the breast cancer community can get involved in the various events, including breast cancer awareness walks, a flower arrangement class, a silent auction and a Zumbathon fundraiser. “Partnerships with local businesses have given us the visibility and support to take our message, outreach and services to the entire community,” emphasized Leslie Hunter, executive director. Thriving Pink will be holding a Pinktober silent auction. Community members can stop by the Thriving Pink office at 501 2nd St. in Davis at any point during the month to bid on four special silent auction items. Prizes include a three-day, two-night stay at a townhouse in Avila Beach and a Séka Hills mill tour and olive oil/wine tasting for ten guests. Other prizes include a handmade quilt crafted by local volunteers and a one-of-a-kind artist’s proof titled “Daisys” from Tim Collom. Those interested in bidding can also do so by emailing info@thrivingpink.org or during the 2nd Friday Art About on Oct. 13 from 5 to 8 p.m. The Davis Food Co-op and Davis ACE Hardware will be hosting a “Round-up at the Register” for the entire month of October. Customers are asked to round up their purchase to the next dollar, with the extra cents being donated to Thriving Pink. The Woodland Police Officers’ Association, in partnership with the Woodland Law Enforcement Assistance Foundation, will be selling pink patches for the entire month. Patches are $10, with all proceeds going to Thriving Pink, and can be purchased from the Woodland Police Department lobby. On Oct. 6 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Beamer Elementary School, residents can join representatives from the Woodland City Council, Woodland’s sister city La Piedad in Mexico, Beamer students, teachers and families and other community members for the Sister City Bi-National Walk for Breast Cancer. < Back Two Yolo County organizations awarded grants totaling $94,000 from Dignity Health ROBYN DOBSON Jan 14, 2024 Dignity Health recently announced the distribution of $1,060,274 to 15 community-based organizations in Sacramento and Yolo Counties to improve the health and well-being of vulnerable and underserved populations. Every three years, Dignity Health and health system partners conduct a Community Health Needs Assessment in each county to determine the most pressing health priorities. The 2022 community assessment indicated that having access to mental and behavioral health and substance-use services are key priorities, as well as having access to basic needs such as housing, jobs and food, according to a press release from Dignity Health. “A core element of our mission is giving back and we take pride in sustaining our support for organizations that go the extra mile to address the diverse needs of our community,” said Dignity Health Community Health and Outreach Manager, Phoua Moua. “These collaborations empower us to take on the intricate health and human challenges faced by our community.” Two Yolo County community partnership projects were selected, totaling $94,000 in community grants. The first selected program was Thriving Pink ProspeROSA: A Collaborative Breast Cancer Outreach, Education and Program Model. Thriving Pink was awarded $64,000. Thriving Pink is a nonprofit, volunteer-driven organization that aims to support and serve those in Yolo County impacted by breast cancer by providing a network of support and resources. ProspeROSA addresses the need for breast cancer education, screening and support among Latinas in the county by deploying Tu Historia Cuenta, an evidence based promotores education program that connects those at high risk to screening. The program also offers support, education, navigation and resources for breast cancer patients and survivors. ProspeROSA connects the Latino and Spanish-speaking community with information to resources including important genetic testing, free mammograms and breast cancer support. Thriving Pink Board Chair Joni Rubin said they were excited to get the grant award, emphasizing how important outreach and education are for everyone, especially those in the Latino community. Approximately one in 10 Latina women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. According to Rubin, those in the Latino community are also four times less likely to get genetic testing. Rubin also mentioned how grateful they were for their partners, as it allows them to reach more parts of the community and further their goals for the program. “I think this will advance our goals for ProspeROSA tremendously,” Rubin said. “This also really allows us to further enhance the connections with our partners. This will be really transformative.” Collaborators include the UC Davis Office of Community Outreach and Engagement Comprehensive Cancer Center and Winters Healthcare. Yolo County Public Defender CARES was awarded $30,000 for their Resilient Futures Fund. This project targets incarceration and poor health function as a causal loop for many indigent individuals who are accused of crimes and struggle with social determinants of health. Resilient Futures Fund helps to remove financial barriers to success by partnering with agencies who represent and/or provide services to justice impacted clients. Collaborators include the Yolo County Conflict Panel and Yolo County District Attorney’s Office – Restorative Justice Partnership. “I find ongoing inspiration in the inventive and unique solutions crafted by our community partners to address the expanding needs of our community,” said Michael Korpiel, Greater Sacramento Market president of Dignity Health. “Through our investments in these organizations, we aim to cultivate a sense of belonging and comprehensiveness. < Back Thriving Pink restarts monthly ‘cafecito’ in the park event GERARDO ZAVALA Mar 9, 2024 Thriving Pink’s ProspeROSA is restarting its “cafecito” in the park aimed at providing a space for the county’s Latino population to connect and discuss issues relating to breast cancer. The event will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. the first Saturday of every month from April through September at Woodside Park located at 1599 Cottonwood St. in Woodland. Attendees will also get to participate in a walk around the park together inviting people to “caminar con guerreras.” ProspeROSA is a Spanish-speaker-centered program run by Thriving Pink, a Yolo County-based nonprofit organization dedicated to helping people in the county impacted by breast cancer. It created its “cafecito” in the park event last year to provide outreach and support to the Latino and Spanish-speaking breast cancer community. Maria Del Rio, Spanish community coordinator for the program, said during the first event that it’s important to address the lack of support for the Latino population battling breast cancer. “For Latinos, we’re very community-driven,” she said during the first “cafecito” event in May 2023. “Building networks and sharing a meal, that’s meaningful and provides support.” Del Rio is a breast cancer survivor and argued that she would’ve benefited from a support group with other Latinas prior to the creation of the event. “I was diagnosed at 27 with stage two breast cancer and… my friends were there to support me, but I couldn’t find a network of people that was my age or knew someone who has gone through this,” she recounted. Dr. Alicia Silva, a chairperson for Thriving Pink, spearheaded the creation of ProspeROSA — the nonprofit’s Spanish-centered program — after noticing that there was a lack of resources available for her Spanish-speaking patients. She highlighted the need to create more awareness among the Latino community because although breast cancer rates for Latinos in Yolo County are roughly the same as the average rate for other communities, they are often diagnosed in more advanced stages leading to worse outcomes. “So this is really important and really special,” Silva stressed in May 2023. ProspeROSA’s headquarters are located at 501 2nd St. in Davis and serve as a place for individuals to connect, build community, check out books and other resources in Spanish and English and participate in programs, according to Board of Directors Chair Joni Rubin. < Back Letter: Stand Up To Cancer In October LETTER TO THE EDITOR Sep 6, 2023 The month of October is upon us, evoking images of fall leaves, Halloween celebrations, and ... Pink Ribbons. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and, for those of us who have been diagnosed with breast cancer, this can be a challenging time with frequent reminders of our diagnoses. I experience conflicting emotions throughout the month. I find it exhausting at times to hear about breast cancer. I feel sad that, in the 15 years since my diagnosis, the incidence of breast cancer has increased. I'm frustrated that my daughter must also live with the risk of a breast cancer diagnosis. Yet I also experience hope for the incredible medical advances being made and appreciation for the amazing level of support that is demonstrated here each October: pink window clings hanging in businesses, city council proclamations, community fundraisers, breast cancer awareness walks, and volunteer-led events. I am reminded that I live in a caring community and am not alone on my journey. I chair the board of Thriving Pink, a nonprofit that supports the breast cancer community. While we rally each October to increase awareness, fighting and thriving with breast cancer is not about an event that occurs once a year. We are there 7 days a week, 365 days a year, in real and tangible ways, offering financial aid, peer mentorship, education, and a community of empowerment, resilience, and hope. < Back City of Woodland proclaims October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month Angelica Vera-Franco Oct 6, 2024 The city of Woodland proclaimed the month of October 2024 to be Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In the proclamation read by Councilwoman Victoria Fernandez during Tuesday’s city council meeting, she noted that breast cancer is among the most commonly diagnosed cancers in American women, estimating that “1-in-8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer over the course of their lifetime with over 4 million women now living in the U.S. with a history of breast cancer.” The proclamation goes on to state it will be “renewing its commitment to fighting this disease, providing education on risk reduction and early detection and supporting those affected by breast cancer.” This proclamation was established in partnership with Thriving Pink, a non-profit organization that was established in 2016 with a mission to help local breast cancer survivors in Yolo County through a network of support, programs and services at no charge. “Thriving Pink helps the breast cancer community from the time of initial diagnosis and throughout survivorship, providing individual financial grants for immediate and essential needs and programs such as Pink Peer mentors for newly diagnosed individuals, renewal retreats for those who have completed treatment and wellness/educational workshops for all,” the resolution states. Holly Rodriguez, a physical therapist and who is on the Board of Directors for Thriving Pink expressed appreciation for the proclamation passed and emphasized the resources and support that the organization provides for the community. “We’d like to thank the Woodland city council for recognizing October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the efforts of Thriving Pink with the risk of breast cancer in one in eight women, as you said in the U.S. and it’s also one in 1,000 men. It’s important to us that the community knows that there are Thriving Pink resources and support available at no cost,” Rodriguez said. Former mayor of Woodland, Xochitl Rodriguez, also spoke about ProsperRosa, a program that is offered to help the Spanish-speaking and Latino community with resources about breast cancer. < Back Pink Gala celebrates grant recipients SPECIAL TO THE ENTERPRISE May 27, 2023 Courage, resilience and determination — all this is needed and more for a fight against cancer, a difficult journey which no one should go through alone. Every year, our amazing community comes together to honor that journey at the Thriving Pink Gala. Over 280 attendees and supporters lifted up and lit pink candles together at the beautiful Yin Ranch Estate to recognize the 26 grant awardees, and many other survivors and thrivers in our community. “Our hearts are filled with gratitude for our caring community which supports so many local women and their families,” said Thriving Pink Executive Director Leslie Hunter. All proceeds from the Gala that was held on May 5, 2023 directly benefit Granting Pink, a core Thriving Pink program which provides financial assistance for urgent and immediate needs. “A total of over $278,400 in critical individual grants have been provided since we started seven years ago” shared Granting Pink Chair Rose Cholewinski of SwimAmerica Davis. All recipients are from Yolo County and many are newly diagnosed women referred to Thriving Pink by local medical doctors and nurses. In addition to the much needed financial assistance, Thriving Pink is dedicated to providing a compassionate network of resources ranging from Pink Peers and mentors, to support groups and professionally facilitated educational workshops. Many grant awardees who came to the Gala event were overwhelmed with the incredible love and support from our community. “I work two part-time jobs to support my family. When you see me, please know that you see my faith, my family, my two daughters, and this amazing community. I was 27 years old when I was diagnosed and went through a double mastectomy and treatment. This means so much to me,” shared Maria Del Rio, a grant awardee. Many Local Pink Heroes were recognized as Community Service Awardees and partners at the Pink Gala including Linda Dunn of Bloom Again, the George & Lena Valente Foundation, Dr. Claudia DeYoung of Kaiser Permanente, Tana Toll, RN at Dignity Health, Dr. Alicia Silva of Sutter Hospital, and Yolo County Supervisor Jim Provenza. Health care partners from Sutter Health, Kaiser, Dignity Health, Northbay Health and CommuniCare also joined the special event. A special presentation also recognized Davis Firefighters Local 3494 for their unwavering commitment as Platinum Pink partners of Thriving Pink. “We have been with Thriving Pink from the beginning and it is amazing to see this volunteer driven organization grow over the years. The Pink Team is really making a positive difference for so many and we’re so honored to be part of it,” shared Emily Lo, Davis Fire Department Battalion Chief/Local 3494. A special thank you to our dedicated event committee who made this night so special, including Emma Hunter, our Gala Chair/Co-MC, and Krysten Cholewinski, our Co-MC. The special occasion was made even more beautiful by Kelly Currywood of Circle Z Farms who provided the floral centerpieces as gifts for the awardees. This Gala event’s incredible success, thanks to our generous donors, partners, volunteers, and supporters, has raised over half of the annual amount needed to replenish our Granting Pink Fund.
