< Back Applications open for Thriving Pink grant program ROBYN DOBSON Dec 23, 2023 Local nonprofit Thriving Pink is now accepting grant applications for their Granting Pink Program. Granting Pink provides grants for individuals being treated for breast cancer in Yolo County, supplying direct support for immediate and essential needs including medical care, rent, groceries, treatment and prescriptions. According to their website, Thriving Pink awarded $64,000 to 35 local breast cancer survivors last year. Since 2017, Granting Pink has helped over 200 individuals. “I am so proud of our Yolo county community which ensures Thriving Pink can continue to do this good work,” said Rose Cholewinski, Granting Pink chair and owner of SwimAmerica-Davis in a press release. “We have distributed a total of over $260,000 to help many in Yolo County who are fighting this disease that has taken too many loved ones.” Individual grant applications are now available on the website at www.thrivingpink.org in English and Spanish, and can be submitted until Jan. 31, 2024. Individuals can also nominate a friend, neighbor or family member, and fill out the straightforward application on their behalf. “The generosity and personal support provided for those of us who receive these generous gifts makes Thriving Pink unique in this community,” said Martha Ozonoff, a past grant recipient who volunteers her time as a Thriving Pink board member to help the community. Tatum Clinton-Selin, another grant recipient, had just moved to the area from the East Coast, away from her family, when she found a lump during a self-exam. “I was not even old enough for a mammogram when I was diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in March 2021,” Clinton-Selin shared. “In the past eighteen months, I went through surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. I am thankful for Thriving Pink and the great support from this caring community.” Thriving Pink also provides Pink Peers for newly diagnosed women, and open workshops facilitated and led by medical providers and other professionals: Pink Speaker Series: 7 p.m. – 8:30 p.m., 2nd and 4th Monday each month. Virtual Workshops with topics including wellness, treatment options, and support group settings. Metastatic Breast Cancer Support Group: 5:30 p.m. – 7 p.m., Tuesdays, Jan. 16, 23, 30 and Feb. 6. - Thompson selects Liu as Yolo County Woman of the Year | Thriving Pink
< Back Thompson selects Liu as Yolo County Woman of the Year Rebecca Wasik Mar 4, 2025 Each year, Rep. Mike Thompson, D-St. Helena, recognizes one woman from each of the districts he represents as ‘Woman of the Year’. All of the honorees were celebrated at a reception at Trinchero Winery in St. Helena on Sunday, March 2, including this year’s Yolo County Woman of the Year, Mary Yin Liu. "I am truly humbled and honored," said Liu. "I first met congress member Thompson nearly three decades ago when I graduated law school and moved to Northern California to work as a deputy district attorney." Liu has lived in Davis for 23 years with her husband Harris and two adult sons, who are alumni of Davis High School. "Mary Yin Liu has gone above and beyond in serving our community, both as a founder of a local nonprofit, and a leader in charitable organizations,” said Thompson. “Her wisdom, leadership, and dedication to serving others make her such an excellent leader. I am honored to recognize her as Yolo County’s Woman of the Year.” She has served as Vice President of the Solano County Women Lawyers Association; on the Yolo County Planning Commission; is a McDonald’s Franchisee with 21 restaurants in Yolo, Solano and Sacramento counties and was the first minority and female President for the Northern California Operators Association. Liu also founded Davis non-profit, Thriving Pink. Thriving Pink is dedicated to helping those impacted by breast cancer thrive through free mentor programs, financial assistance, support groups, educational workshops and other valuable resources. "The Pink Team is incredibly inspiring," Liu said. "We have all been part of a loved one's journey to fight this disease, and many of our volunteers are breast cancer survivors or thrivers themselves." CC and Regina Yin, Liu’s parents, founded the Asian Pacific American Public Affairs Association (APAPA), of which Liu is now CEO. APAPA is a non-profit organization that advances leadership and civic engagement in Asian Pacific Islander communities. "APAPA will be entering its 25th year silver anniversary next year, and there is so much to celebrate," remarked Liu. In her role at APAPA, Liu has expanded the non-profit’s internship program and led the APAPA team to organize the inaugural California Asian American Advocacy Day at the state capitol last year. This year's Advocacy Day will be held on April 28. "There are so many incredible trailblazers who have come before us, and who will come after us,” said Liu. “I am grateful for the opportunity to give back to my community, and I look forward to working with and seeing the next generation of leaders make an even greater impact.” In 2024, Liu was recognized as a Top 20 AAPI Change Maker by The Sacramento Bee. In 2022, she was selected as Woman of the Year by Assemblymember Jim Cooper. A complete list of Thompson’s 2025 winners include: Wilda Shock – Lake County Woman of the Year Norma Ferriz de Massaro – Napa County Woman of the Year Lisa Hilas – Solano County Woman of the Year Thea Hensel – Sonoma County Woman of the Year Mary Yin Liu – Yolo County Woman of the Year Previous Next

- Thriving Pink: Pinktober gratitude | Thriving Pink
< Back Thriving Pink: Pinktober gratitude SPECIAL TO THE ENTERPRISE Nov 28, 2022 During National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, the Thriving Pink team of dedicated supporters and board members reached out to many individuals and businesses in Yolo County. The volunteer-driven organization, which is led by many breast cancer survivors/thrivers, wants to ensure the local nonprofit will continue to grow and sustain its core services and programs. In October this year, over 140 individuals and businesses in Yolo County participated in and donated to the PINKtober outreach campaign for Thriving Pink. Local businesses have been particularly generous knowing that 100% of the donations will stay in this community to directly help local breast cancer survivors. “I was not even old enough for a mammogram when I was diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in March 2021. I had moved here from the east coast, away from my family, and found a lump during a self-exam. In the past eighteen months, I went through surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. I am thankful for Thriving Pink and the great support from this community,” said Tatum Clinton-Selin, a Thriving Pink grant recipient. “Thriving Pink’s mentoring program and their Pink Speaker Series workshops led by medical professionals are unparalleled among breast cancer organizations.” “It is truly heart-warming to see so many generous individuals and businesses making a difference to help local breast cancer survivors thrive,” shares Leslie Hunter, Executive Director of Thriving Pink. “As a community owned grocery store, the customers of the Davis Food Co-op truly care about how their money positively impacts their neighbors,” said Vince Marchese, Marketing Manager Davis Food Co-op. “It is important for us, during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, to show our support through the Round Up at the Register program to raise money for Thriving Pink’s programs to help local breast cancer patients and survivors.” Jeremy Brooks of Brooks Painting shares, “Giving back is one of our company’s core values. All of our team members step up to support Thriving Pink. We personally know many who have benefitted from this wonderful organization.” A gift to Thriving Pink is truly a gift our local community. FIT House, Balance Point Pilates, Get Fit Davis, and Jazzercise Davis were among many local businesses which hosted class fundraisers for the worthy cause. “We believe Thriving Pink is an incredibly important resource for the women of Yolo County impacted by a diagnosis of breast cancer, as well as for their families,” said Stephanie Tooker Jordan, Jazzercise Davis Owner and Instructor. We are truly grateful for the many individuals and local businesses who have recently given so generously through our PINKtober fundraising campaign to support Thriving Pink’s services and programs for our breast cancer community.
