Community Outreach: Thriving Pink conducts outreach and awareness at various community events throughout the year. Volunteers help with table set-up and are present to connect with the community by sharing information about our programs and services. Requires: Join us in a short orientation to Thriving Pink and volunteer for an upcoming outreach event. Pink Peer Mentoring: Peer mentors are connected with an individual who is newly diagnosed to share their experience and offer fellowship and support. Anyone who has been diagnosed as a breast cancer previvor, survivor, or metavivor who is one year post initial treatment can apply to become a Thriving Pink Peer Mentor. Requires: Application, pre-screening interview, training, and a commitment to support the individual you are matched with. Event Support: Thriving Pink hosts a Pink Gala and volunteers perform many activities from event planning, support and donor solicitation, today of event set-up, and on-site support. Requires: Join us and participate in upcoming events. Pink Pals for a Grant Recipient: Pals are matched with our Granting Pink recipients, and they provide connection and support throughout the Granting Pink process. This includes letting grantees know they received a grant, making them aware of Thriving Pink’s other programs, and presenting them with their grant. Requires: Passion for supporting breast cancer community members, pre-screening interview, familiarity with Thriving Pink programs and services, and a 3-month commitment. Sewing Craft Circle: A volunteer sewing group that makes quilts, face masks, and mastectomy recovery heart pillows for local breast cancer survivors. Instruction will be provided, and beginners are welcome. Requires: Participation is on a drop-in basis and meets every month. Fundraising: We invite you to host a fundraising event with donations going to Thriving Pink. Coordinate with us today! Bilingual Outreach and Support: Translate Thriving Pink materials into Spanish, develop new outreach materials in Spanish, and help conduct outreach to Spanish speaking individuals/communities in Yolo County. Our Pink Team We invite you to join our Pink Team, which is dedicated to helping those impacted by breast cancer in Yolo County, California, to thrive by providing a compassionate network of support and resources in partnership with the community. Our volunteers come from all different backgrounds—those diagnosed with breast cancer, community leaders, business owners, and health professionals. We are the only local nonprofit in Yolo County that focuses on serving and supporting the local breast cancer community. Until there is a cure, we will continue to work together to make a difference in the lives of those who are battling this disease. Executive Team & Board of Directors Leslie Hunter Executive Director Leslie is honored to step into the Executive Director role and to continue Thriving Pink’s mission. She brings her event planning, volunteer management, and fundraising experience to Thriving Pink to partner with the local community to enhance our services. Since its founding in 2016, Leslie has been instrumental in establishing Thriving Pink as the only local nonprofit in Davis and Yolo County which focuses on serving and supporting the local breast cancer community. As Executive Director, she leads a dedicated group of volunteers who support Thriving Pink’s core programs. Leslie brings genuine love and care to each individual Thriving Pink touches and the tangible good the organization brings motivates her to continue to expand Thriving Pink’s reach in the Yolo County community. Denise Rose, MS, PCC Board Chair, Board of Directors Denise is an International Coaching Federation (ICF) Professional Certified Coach and grief specialist with a master's degree in Counseling and Mental Health. With over 40 years of professional experience, including two decades in bereavement services and 15 years in higher education HR, she brings deep expertise to her work helping individuals navigate change and growth. After her own breast cancer treatment in 2016, Denise began a transformative healing journey. Now serving as Board Chair of Thriving Pink, she has held multiple leadership roles including Peer Mentor, Retreat Co-chair, and Programs Committee Chair. She also serves on UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center's Community Advisory Board. Having experienced the healing power of community herself, Denise is honored to give back and support others affected by breast cancer in Yolo County. Holly Rodriguez, PT, MPT, CLT-LANA Vice Chair, Board of Directors & Workshop Committee Chair Holly is a local physical therapist clinical specialist specializing in oncology and lymphedema rehabilitation at Kaiser Permanente. She has been a leader within her field developing programs and pathways in aiding the recovery of cancer survivors. She has presented educational lectures to surgeons, oncologists, and many other health care providers. Holly is a presenter and guest speaker at Thriving Pink Workshops/Pink Speaker Series. She supports PINKtober community outreach, chairs the Nominating Committee and Zumbathon. During her free time, she enjoys spending time with her husband, family and friends, teaching Zumba, and international travel. Carmelita Ramirez Secretary, Board of Directors Carmelita is a young breast cancer guerrera and passionate public health professional dedicated to advancing health equity. As the Mobile Mammo+ Program Coordinator at UC Davis Health and an MPH candidate, she leads mobile breast cancer screening efforts for underserved communities across Northern California. She serves as Board Secretary and is an active member of the ProspeROSA committee, bringing bilingual expertise to support Thriving Pink's outreach to the Latinx community. Carmelita brings a unique blend of lived experience, strategic coordination skills, and a deep commitment to empowering people of color. She hopes to offer fresh insight, cultural humility, and a strong voice for community advocacy to support Thriving Pink's mission to ensure no one faces their breast cancer journey alone. Andrea Mayer Treasurer, Board of Directors Andrea is a planning consultant, farmer, and 26-year resident of Yolo County. She is an ardent supporter of women’s empowerment in all areas of life. As a breast cancer survivor/thriver, she is proud to be able to provide support for others. In addition to being a Thriving Pink Board Member, she is a member of the Yolo CASA Advisory Board (Court Appointed Advocates for Foster Youth) and is a volunteer at the UC Davis Arboretum Nursery. She and her husband Jim are proud parents of adult children Sam and Carly. Andrea enjoys hiking, gardening, culinary adventures and time with family. Andrea chairs the Thriving Pink Budget and Finance Committee and is an active Pink Peer Mentor. Gena Bravo, MSN, RN, HACP Board Member Gena Bravo is an innovative healthcare leader with over 25 years of clinical and leadership expertise. Woodland Memorial Hospital CEO, Gena brings a proven record of success in hospital operations. Throughout her career, she has excelled in advocating excellence, embracing strategic challenges – and working to cultivate her passion for patient care among her staff. A Southern California native, Gena earned both her Bachelor and Master of Nursing degrees from the University of San Francisco. In her spare time, Gena enjoys watching baseball, spending time with her husband and kids, and staying active in local community service. Gena is a breast cancer Thriver who openly shares the story of her journey to provide hope and inspiration to others. She serves as a volunteer firefighter for the West Plainfield Fire Department in Davis; a trustee on the Woodland Healthcare Foundation Board; a board member for the Woodland Chamber of Commerce; and as a Board Commissioner for Partnership Healthplan of California. She is also an active Rotarian with the Woodland Noontime Rotary Club. Gena was recognized by the Honorable John Garamendi of California as a 2021 Woman of the Year for her service to the Yolo County community during the pandemic. Mary Yin Liu Founder & Board Member Mary is the Founder of Thriving Pink, and served as Past Executive Director. She and her husband Harris continue to give their time and resources as the organization has grown. They generously donated the Thriving Pink Office & Community Room as a beautiful space for our community. She was inspired by her friendship with Ann Murray Paige in the summer of 2016 to continue the legacy of her nonprofit, "Project Pink". She truly appreciates and is inspired by the many women in this community who are fighting this disease, and those impacted by breast cancer. Mary is a local McDonald’s franchisee in Woodland, Sacramento, and Solano County. She worked as a Deputy District Attorney before becoming a business owner. With a heart for the community, she actively supports many nonprofit organizations and community organizations. She owns and operates Golden Arch Enterprises. www.goldenarch.org Emily Lo Board Member Emily made history as the first female and Asian American Battalion Chief in the Davis Fire Department, serving the community for 35 years before her retirement. As Co-Chair of the California Firefighter Joint Apprenticeship Committee and Commissioner to Recruit Women for the Fire Service, she has dedicated her career to mentoring and encouraging the next generation of female firefighters. Emily's commitment to service extends beyond the fire station—she has been a grassroots partner with Thriving Pink for nearly a decade, helping to establish the annual crab feed fundraiser hosted by Davis Firefighters Local 3494. Her leadership on the Executive Board as Treasurer for Local 3494 from 1997 to 2022 reflects her dedication to both her profession and her community. Emily brings her strength, sense of public service, and collaborative spirit to the Thriving Pink Board, continuing her lifelong mission of helping people through meaningful community connections. Katie Minke Board Member & Fundraising Chair Katie has worked in public relations for more than 30 years, currently for Kaiser Permanente in Solano County. She was introduced to the work of Thriving Pink through her sister, who was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer in late 2018, just a year after their mom – a breast cancer survivor – passed away from ovarian cancer. After a three year battle, her sister passed away in early 2022, leaving behind numerous family and friends who support Thriving Pink’s mission. Katie is passionate about screenings, genetic risk factors, and supporting women and their families on their breast cancer journey. Chris Pineda, RN, MSN Board Member Chris brings both the practitioner's perspective and the patient's lived experience to the Thriving Pink Board. A registered nurse for 32 years at UC Davis Health specializing in solid organ transplantation and nursing management, she recently retired to prioritize her health after her breast cancer diagnosis in 2021. Chris has been an active Thriving Pink community member—participating in the Mentoring Program as both mentee and mentor, serving as a Granting Pink recipient and Gala speaker, and engaging in programs from Saturday morning walks to the Renewal Retreat. She is passionate about bringing breast health education to young women and exploring how spiritual care can support those facing treatment. With the gift of compassion and mercy, and the support of her husband and daughter, Chris continues to share her strength and hope with the Thriving Pink community. Alicia Silva, MD Board Member, Spanish Outreach Chair & ProspeROSA Chair Alicia is a General Surgeon in Davis, California and affiliated with Sutter Health. She has been practicing in the community since 1999 and graduated from UC Davis School of Medicine. While she enjoys the breadth of General Surgery, her heart is in helping women with breast cancer. She understands how vital the Thriving Pink organization is for the survivors of breast cancer, her family and the entire community. She grew up in Yolo County and ardently wants to give back to her community. She is a wonderful guest speaker for our monthly workshops. She has a special interest in increasing breast cancer awareness and support to our Spanish speaking community. Michelle Silva Board Member, External Outreach Committee and Marketing & Communications Committee Michelle has been a breast cancer survivor since 2015, and that journey shaped her approach to compassionate leadership, ensuring no one navigates breast cancer alone. As Chair of both the External Outreach Committee and the Marketing & Communications Committee, she leads strategic efforts to connect Thriving Pink with the broader community. Michelle is the founder of The Savvy CMO, where she partners with visionary leaders in for-profit and nonprofit organizations on ethical marketing strategies. Her client work spans organizations like VSP and the California Chamber of Commerce, and she brings that cross-sector perspective to advancing Thriving Pink's mission. From PINKtober campaigns to year-round advocacy, Michelle is dedicated to building awareness and support for the breast cancer community. She enjoys reading, gardening, camping, and spending time with her family and grandchildren. Thriving Pink Medical Advisor Claudia De Young, MD, MSc Medical Advisor Dr. De Young attended SUNY Buffalo Medical School and completed her internal medicine residency at Rhode Island Hospital/Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. She then went on to complete a women's health fellowship at Boston Medical Center. She joined Kaiser Permanente in 2003 where she started their Breast Clinic within the Department of Surgery. In 2013 she created their cancer survivorship program within Oncology where she actively sees breast cancer survivors following treatment helping them in their journey to move forward; heal the mind, body and spirit; and create a “new normal” for themselves. Dr. De Young is active in the Sacramento breast cancer community and gives community talks regularly on breast cancer screening, risk reduction and survivorship issues. Committee Chairs & Coordinators Rose Cholewinski Granting Pink Chair Rose is the owner of SwimAmerica in Davis and has over 25 years of teaching and coaching experience with swimmers of all ages. She has a passion for supporting the local community through various organizations, including the Chamber of Commerce, Rotary, and Citizens Who Care. She is working with other committee members to review applications through the Granting Pink Program. She believes in sharing “positivity” with others and has personally supported local breast cancer survivors/thrivers. She believes this local grant program will directly benefit many women in our community. Linda Dunn Renewal Retreat Co-Chair Linda is the owner and licensed esthetician of Bloom Again Skin Studio located inside FIT House in Davis. She has advanced training in Oncology Esthetics and gives back to the community with all her heart. She serves regularly in the music ministry at First Baptist Church and volunteers for the Look Good Feel Better program that helps women going through cancer learn to care for their changing skin and use makeup to lift their spirit. Linda supports many outreach events for Thriving Pink and is a lead coordinator for the annual Thriving Pink Renewal Retreat during the spa afternoon for all of the attendees. It is an honor for her to directly support these women and to make these special connections with our community. Sandy Walsh Honorary Chair Pink Speaker Series Sandy has a strong background in the sciences, with a degree in medical technology, and many years teaching biochemistry and working in research laboratories. As a local breast cancer survivor, she wanted to bring current research and cancer treatments to the forefront of her community. She has served as president of California breast cancer organizations and was on the board of the National Breast Cancer Coalition. Over the years, she has established contacts with many guest speakers, including a network of physicians, nurses, physical therapists, counselors, and other health professionals. Emma Hunter, MPH Pink Gala Chair Emma is proud to serve as the Pink Gala Committee Chair. As a longtime Thriving Pink volunteer, Emma has supported a variety of the organization’s programs. She especially loves the Pink Gala, as it serves as an opportunity to honor the Granting Pink Awardees, recognize our community partners, and raise much needed funds for financial grants. The Thriving Pink community inspires Emma to create a beautiful and meaningful event. With a Master of Public Health and a background in development, Emma is excited to use her experience to continue the legacy of the Pink Gala. Virginia Pier Walk Coordinator Virginia leads the Thriving Pink walks on the 3rd Saturday of every month. The walks are a time to share with others within the Thriving Pink community and learn from one another. Virginia is a Doctor of Physical Therapy with an emphasis in Oncology. She worked for Kaiser Permanente in South Sacramento for 19 years. She started the Breast Cancer Group with Dr. Claudia DeYoung. And, 20 years later it is still going strong. Although retired she remains an active participant in the South Sacramento Breast Cancer Group. Virginia, along with others, helps with the April Thriving Pink Gala. Virginia is grateful to be a part of this wonderful organization. Connie Belk Craft Coordinator Connie has been volunteering for Thriving Pink since she and her daughter (then members of National Charity League) helped at Thriving Pink’s annual volunteer day in 2020. After seeing heart pillows displayed on the counter of Mary Liu’s kitchen, Connie began sewing heart pillows at home for women going through breast cancer treatment and surgery. That initial level of service developed into her current role as Craft Coordinator, hosting monthly crafting sessions at the Thriving Pink office to provide ongoing items used in comfort bags and other small gifts given to women throughout the year. Connie has been a dietitian working locally for the past sixteen years and prior as a consultant. Connie thoroughly enjoys being part of Thriving Pink and looks forward to establishing a more coordinated, robust crafting program in the coming year. Sue Peri Photographer Sue had a long career as a photographer, from her college years at UC Davis, through 28 years at the Davis Enterprise. After leaving the Enterprise, she worked as a freelance photographer for a variety of clients including Communicare and Healthy Davis Together. Sue volunteers at Thriving Pink by taking photos at their many events. Sue had breast cancer twice: once in 1999 when her children were young, and again in 2020 at the peak of the pre vaccine Covid pandemic. She appreciates all the support she received from her family, friends and Thriving Pink. Lani Fulcher Administrative Coordinator Lani comes to Thriving Pink with years of nonprofit experience supporting science education, mental health programs, environmental engagement, and community outreach. Her administrative skills have supported boards, executive directors, managers, volunteers, and donors; some of Lani’s most rewarding work has been with preschoolers with special needs and with families struggling with mental health issues. Lani comes with the desire to see the immediate and personal impact of her work—Thriving Pink provides that direct effect with individuals and families. With her enthusiasm and experience, she looks forward to growing within the organization and strengthening Thriving Pink as it serves the community. Gayle Barry Immediate Past Board Chair (2024-2025) Gayle is a senior leader for a local Federal agency focusing on the care and health of California’s abundant agricultural and natural resources. Diagnosed with Triple Negative breast cancer in 2017, she moved to Davis with her family to make a lifestyle change for her health. She shares her journey through surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and recovery to help others with awareness and support. As Chair of the Mentoring Program, and leading the Pink Peers, she believes in giving back by helping others through a difficult journey with encouragement and support. She truly believes you do not have to go through this diagnosis alone. When she is not volunteering, Gayle enjoys time with her family and friends, and helping with her family’s ranch. Joni Rubin, MPH, MSW Past Board Chair (2022-2024) & Outreach Committee Chair Joni served on the Thriving Pink Board with over 30 years of experience as a healthcare and wellness leader, innovator, and educator. Diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008, Joni relied on the support of family, friends, colleagues, and community throughout her journey. Paying it forward, Joni is a strong advocate for the breast cancer community. She led our outreach efforts, supports our mentorship programs, and is also a Pink Peer and mentor to many in our community. Joni continues to serve on the ProspeROSA committee supporting Spanish outreach in the community. Bubbly Bajwa, MD Past Board Chair (2020-2022) Bubbly is an Internal Medicine Physician and Chief Medical Informatics Officer (CMIO) at NorthBay Medical Center. Educated in Canada, she moved to Davis in 2002 with her husband, Guneet Bajwa, and their two children. She has actively participated in the Davis Music school board and many local non-profit organizations including CASA and Yolo Food Bank. Losing her mother to cancer in 2011, a mere 12 weeks after diagnosis, was a life-changing moment for her. Cancer is a diagnosis that is transformative affecting both the person and the families in many ways. She hopes to support those afflicted with this disease through their journey to ensure that with resilience, faith, love, and support no one is ever left alone. Brelle Albert Founding President (2016-2020) Through her own personal experience diagnosed with breast cancer, she has reached out to help and support many others in our community. Brelle has served as Co-Chair of the Renewal Retreat and the Pink Gala through multiple years to ensure a strong foundation for the success of our Pink Team. She has stepped up to light the path ahead of us in so many ways. We greatly appreciate her contributions to our Thriving Pink community and continue to be inspired by her leadership.

Chris Thriving Warrior I’m a mother, wife, friend, and a nurse who goes to Zumba to dance and de-stress. I happened to meet Mary Liu, the founder of Thriving Pink, at a Zumbathon benefitting the organization. So when a routine mammogram in January 2019 revealed a lump, she was the first person I reached out to. The breast cancer diagnosis truly made my life “messy”. I had five surgeries in 2021 and 2022. I believe early detection saved my life. “I never thought I would be a recipient of Thriving Pink’s resources,” says Chris. The non-profit organization has allowed me to meet many warriors and thrivers. I join everyone on the monthly Saturday morning walks and connect via Zoom to the Monday workshops. I have learned more about breast cancer life through the Pink Speaker series as well as meditation, mindfulness, Yoga, Reiki, seasons of survivorship, worldwide clinical trials and so much more. My favorite part of the workshops is the “check-ins” at the end where the simple “how are you doing” goes a long way. In addition to the medical plan I have with my team of doctors and medical personnel, I now also have a healing plan. This story and photo was developed in partnership with @KLJ Studios in Woodland.

< Back Thriving Pink: Grants help families through difficult times SPECIAL TO THE ENTERPRISE Apr 2, 2023 Pink Team volunteers have seen firsthand and embrace the tremendous resiliency of those in our community who face a challenging and life-altering breast cancer diagnosis, many of them our friends, family members and neighbors. Many also struggle to find their footing to move forward with increasing health burdens, the inability to work, rising medical bills, and housing and food insecurity. It is also often difficult and unexpected news to hear such a diagnosis with a vast majority of these women, about 85%, are the first in their families to face such a diagnosis. Breast cancer is a prevalent disease with about 13% (1 in 8) facing this difficult journey. It is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among American women. Thriving Pink is dedicated to serve the breast cancer community in Yolo County to ensure no one goes through this difficult journey alone. The local organization provides a compassionate network of support through one-on-one Pink Peers, educational workshops led by medical professionals, resources, and support groups. “I truly appreciate the Pink Peer program and workshops because it has made such a world of difference for me. I encourage others to reach out too,” shared Siv Winberg. Thriving Pink also provides critical financial assistance to local breast cancer survivors through individual financial grants to many local women and their families who need the most help and support for essential and basic needs. “We want to make a positive impact on a local level, and we see the great need to share our resources to do this together,” shared Thriving Pink founder Mary Yin Liu. The poverty rate in Yolo County is 21.95% higher than the California average and the third highest county poverty rate in California. Jacob Hibel, the co-director for UC Davis’ Center for Poverty & Inequality Research, made a statement recently to address the poverty crisis. “Even before the Covid-19 pandemic, Yolo County families were struggling economically, with about 1 in 5 households being below the poverty threshold.” The Granting Pink Program for Thriving Pink continues to help many women and their families by filling a great need for immediate and essential needs, covering medical treatment, health insurance costs, food and groceries, rent, transportation, and quality-of-life care. Rose Cholewinski of SwimAmerica-Davis has served as the dedicated Chair of Granting Pink since its inception when Thriving Pink started in 2016, “Thank you for making this important program possible because what you do matters, and your generosity is making a difference.” Thriving Pink volunteers, including dozens of Pink Peers and board members, showed up to help present 27 newly diagnosed women in Yolo County with thoughtful gift bags filled with resource materials and individual financial grants. A local grant recipient who spoke Spanish from Woodland arrived with nearly a dozen relatives surrounding her — her parents, husband and young children. “I can’t believe so many people in the community gave so much to help us,” she said. “My doctor referred me to Thriving Pink and I thought it was too good to be true, but it’s really true. I can now pay for more medical bills and my family doesn’t have to worry so much. You are all here just to care for me and I am very moved by all this support.” “There were a lot of tears, but they were good tears — some of them mine, too,” shared Jenna Elms, a local Davis High School student. “The gifts were touching and meaningful, and I’m so glad to be here this weekend to volunteer.” Thriving Pink will celebrate and recognize all the Thriving Pink grant awardees, community partners, and supporters at the upcoming seventh annual Pink Gala. < Back City of Woodland proclaims October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month Angelica Vera-Franco Oct 6, 2024 The city of Woodland proclaimed the month of October 2024 to be Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In the proclamation read by Councilwoman Victoria Fernandez during Tuesday’s city council meeting, she noted that breast cancer is among the most commonly diagnosed cancers in American women, estimating that “1-in-8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer over the course of their lifetime with over 4 million women now living in the U.S. with a history of breast cancer.” The proclamation goes on to state it will be “renewing its commitment to fighting this disease, providing education on risk reduction and early detection and supporting those affected by breast cancer.” This proclamation was established in partnership with Thriving Pink, a non-profit organization that was established in 2016 with a mission to help local breast cancer survivors in Yolo County through a network of support, programs and services at no charge. “Thriving Pink helps the breast cancer community from the time of initial diagnosis and throughout survivorship, providing individual financial grants for immediate and essential needs and programs such as Pink Peer mentors for newly diagnosed individuals, renewal retreats for those who have completed treatment and wellness/educational workshops for all,” the resolution states. Holly Rodriguez, a physical therapist and who is on the Board of Directors for Thriving Pink expressed appreciation for the proclamation passed and emphasized the resources and support that the organization provides for the community. “We’d like to thank the Woodland city council for recognizing October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the efforts of Thriving Pink with the risk of breast cancer in one in eight women, as you said in the U.S. and it’s also one in 1,000 men. It’s important to us that the community knows that there are Thriving Pink resources and support available at no cost,” Rodriguez said. Former mayor of Woodland, Xochitl Rodriguez, also spoke about ProsperRosa, a program that is offered to help the Spanish-speaking and Latino community with resources about breast cancer. < Back Breast Cancer Awareness 2023: Thriving Pink expands reach to Hispanic community THRIVING PINK BOARD OF DIRECTORS Oct 11, 2023 Breast cancer continues to be the most common cancer diagnosis among women, and worldwide is the leading cause of cancer death. The recent pandemic also highlighted the inequities in breast cancer treatments for under-resourced communities across the country. While there has been an overall 40-percent decline in breast cancer deaths over the past 30 years — with progress in increasing awareness, early diagnosis, and treatment — there is still a persistent gap between racial groups in the United States. Breast cancer rates in the Hispanic Latino communities for instance, show that they are more likely to be diagnosed in advanced stages and 30% more likely to die from breast cancer than the overall population. Some factors which contribute to these disparities include genetics, access to healthcare, language barriers, and social health barriers. Hispanic and Latina women are also less likely to receive screenings for mammograms which is the most reliable method of early detection. Thriving Pink’s new outreach program, ProspeROSA, is making a positive difference to provide support and services to the Hispanic and Latino communities in Yolo County. These Breast Cancer “Guerreras” or “Warriors” no longer have to travel this journey alone. “It’s hard to imagine how far I’ve come as a first generation immigrant working two jobs to support my family,” Maria Del Rio said. “I so appreciate the support and receiving a Thriving Pink financial grant. When I was 27 years old, I was diagnosed and went through a double mastectomy and treatment. Now I’m a new volunteer for ProspeROSA. This is so meaningful for me. When you see me, please know that you see more than me — you see my faith, my family, my two young daughters, and this amazing Thriving Pink community who cares so much.” Thriving Pink board member Dr. Alicia Silva works at Sutter Hospital, and volunteers her time to lead Thriving Pink’s ProspeROSA community gatherings in Woodland and other parts of Yolo County to distribute important breast cancer resource materials from Thriving Pink in Spanish, including applications for financial assistance through individual grants. “I see the great need in this community. I immigrated to this country as a young child from Mexico, and graduated from UC Davis medical school. “My heart is in this community, and I’m honored to provide bilingual support and help with outreach to our diverse communities.” Yolo County has the third highest poverty rate in the state of California. In Yolo County, a third of the population are Hispanic /Latino, and 1 in 5 households struggle financially being below the poverty level. < Back Letter: Stand Up To Cancer In October LETTER TO THE EDITOR Sep 6, 2023 The month of October is upon us, evoking images of fall leaves, Halloween celebrations, and ... Pink Ribbons. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and, for those of us who have been diagnosed with breast cancer, this can be a challenging time with frequent reminders of our diagnoses. I experience conflicting emotions throughout the month. I find it exhausting at times to hear about breast cancer. I feel sad that, in the 15 years since my diagnosis, the incidence of breast cancer has increased. I'm frustrated that my daughter must also live with the risk of a breast cancer diagnosis. Yet I also experience hope for the incredible medical advances being made and appreciation for the amazing level of support that is demonstrated here each October: pink window clings hanging in businesses, city council proclamations, community fundraisers, breast cancer awareness walks, and volunteer-led events. I am reminded that I live in a caring community and am not alone on my journey. I chair the board of Thriving Pink, a nonprofit that supports the breast cancer community. While we rally each October to increase awareness, fighting and thriving with breast cancer is not about an event that occurs once a year. We are there 7 days a week, 365 days a year, in real and tangible ways, offering financial aid, peer mentorship, education, and a community of empowerment, resilience, and hope. < Back Thompson selects Liu as Yolo County Woman of the Year Rebecca Wasik Mar 4, 2025 Each year, Rep. Mike Thompson, D-St. Helena, recognizes one woman from each of the districts he represents as ‘Woman of the Year’. All of the honorees were celebrated at a reception at Trinchero Winery in St. Helena on Sunday, March 2, including this year’s Yolo County Woman of the Year, Mary Yin Liu. "I am truly humbled and honored," said Liu. "I first met congress member Thompson nearly three decades ago when I graduated law school and moved to Northern California to work as a deputy district attorney." Liu has lived in Davis for 23 years with her husband Harris and two adult sons, who are alumni of Davis High School. "Mary Yin Liu has gone above and beyond in serving our community, both as a founder of a local nonprofit, and a leader in charitable organizations,” said Thompson. “Her wisdom, leadership, and dedication to serving others make her such an excellent leader. I am honored to recognize her as Yolo County’s Woman of the Year.” She has served as Vice President of the Solano County Women Lawyers Association; on the Yolo County Planning Commission; is a McDonald’s Franchisee with 21 restaurants in Yolo, Solano and Sacramento counties and was the first minority and female President for the Northern California Operators Association. Liu also founded Davis non-profit, Thriving Pink. Thriving Pink is dedicated to helping those impacted by breast cancer thrive through free mentor programs, financial assistance, support groups, educational workshops and other valuable resources. "The Pink Team is incredibly inspiring," Liu said. "We have all been part of a loved one's journey to fight this disease, and many of our volunteers are breast cancer survivors or thrivers themselves." CC and Regina Yin, Liu’s parents, founded the Asian Pacific American Public Affairs Association (APAPA), of which Liu is now CEO. APAPA is a non-profit organization that advances leadership and civic engagement in Asian Pacific Islander communities. "APAPA will be entering its 25th year silver anniversary next year, and there is so much to celebrate," remarked Liu. In her role at APAPA, Liu has expanded the non-profit’s internship program and led the APAPA team to organize the inaugural California Asian American Advocacy Day at the state capitol last year. This year's Advocacy Day will be held on April 28. "There are so many incredible trailblazers who have come before us, and who will come after us,” said Liu. “I am grateful for the opportunity to give back to my community, and I look forward to working with and seeing the next generation of leaders make an even greater impact.” In 2024, Liu was recognized as a Top 20 AAPI Change Maker by The Sacramento Bee. In 2022, she was selected as Woman of the Year by Assemblymember Jim Cooper.
