- Pink Gala celebrates grant recipients
< Back Pink Gala celebrates grant recipients SPECIAL TO THE ENTERPRISE May 27, 2023 Courage, resilience and determination — all this is needed and more for a fight against cancer, a difficult journey which no one should go through alone. Every year, our amazing community comes together to honor that journey at the Thriving Pink Gala. Over 280 attendees and supporters lifted up and lit pink candles together at the beautiful Yin Ranch Estate to recognize the 26 grant awardees, and many other survivors and thrivers in our community. “Our hearts are filled with gratitude for our caring community which supports so many local women and their families,” said Thriving Pink Executive Director Leslie Hunter. All proceeds from the Gala that was held on May 5, 2023 directly benefit Granting Pink, a core Thriving Pink program which provides financial assistance for urgent and immediate needs. “A total of over $278,400 in critical individual grants have been provided since we started seven years ago” shared Granting Pink Chair Rose Cholewinski of SwimAmerica Davis. All recipients are from Yolo County and many are newly diagnosed women referred to Thriving Pink by local medical doctors and nurses. In addition to the much needed financial assistance, Thriving Pink is dedicated to providing a compassionate network of resources ranging from Pink Peers and mentors, to support groups and professionally facilitated educational workshops. Many grant awardees who came to the Gala event were overwhelmed with the incredible love and support from our community. “I work two part-time jobs to support my family. When you see me, please know that you see my faith, my family, my two daughters, and this amazing community. I was 27 years old when I was diagnosed and went through a double mastectomy and treatment. This means so much to me,” shared Maria Del Rio, a grant awardee. Many Local Pink Heroes were recognized as Community Service Awardees and partners at the Pink Gala including Linda Dunn of Bloom Again, the George & Lena Valente Foundation, Dr. Claudia DeYoung of Kaiser Permanente, Tana Toll, RN at Dignity Health, Dr. Alicia Silva of Sutter Hospital, and Yolo County Supervisor Jim Provenza. Health care partners from Sutter Health, Kaiser, Dignity Health, Northbay Health and CommuniCare also joined the special event. A special presentation also recognized Davis Firefighters Local 3494 for their unwavering commitment as Platinum Pink partners of Thriving Pink. “We have been with Thriving Pink from the beginning and it is amazing to see this volunteer driven organization grow over the years. The Pink Team is really making a positive difference for so many and we’re so honored to be part of it,” shared Emily Lo, Davis Fire Department Battalion Chief/Local 3494. A special thank you to our dedicated event committee who made this night so special, including Emma Hunter, our Gala Chair/Co-MC, and Krysten Cholewinski, our Co-MC. The special occasion was made even more beautiful by Kelly Currywood of Circle Z Farms who provided the floral centerpieces as gifts for the awardees. This Gala event’s incredible success, thanks to our generous donors, partners, volunteers, and supporters, has raised over half of the annual amount needed to replenish our Granting Pink Fund. - Breast Cancer Awareness 2023: Thriving Pink expands reach to Hispanic community
< Back Breast Cancer Awareness 2023: Thriving Pink expands reach to Hispanic community THRIVING PINK BOARD OF DIRECTORS Oct 11, 2023 Breast cancer continues to be the most common cancer diagnosis among women, and worldwide is the leading cause of cancer death. The recent pandemic also highlighted the inequities in breast cancer treatments for under-resourced communities across the country. While there has been an overall 40-percent decline in breast cancer deaths over the past 30 years — with progress in increasing awareness, early diagnosis, and treatment — there is still a persistent gap between racial groups in the United States. Breast cancer rates in the Hispanic Latino communities for instance, show that they are more likely to be diagnosed in advanced stages and 30% more likely to die from breast cancer than the overall population. Some factors which contribute to these disparities include genetics, access to healthcare, language barriers, and social health barriers. Hispanic and Latina women are also less likely to receive screenings for mammograms which is the most reliable method of early detection. Thriving Pink’s new outreach program, ProspeROSA, is making a positive difference to provide support and services to the Hispanic and Latino communities in Yolo County. These Breast Cancer “Guerreras” or “Warriors” no longer have to travel this journey alone. “It’s hard to imagine how far I’ve come as a first generation immigrant working two jobs to support my family,” Maria Del Rio said. “I so appreciate the support and receiving a Thriving Pink financial grant. When I was 27 years old, I was diagnosed and went through a double mastectomy and treatment. Now I’m a new volunteer for ProspeROSA. This is so meaningful for me. When you see me, please know that you see more than me — you see my faith, my family, my two young daughters, and this amazing Thriving Pink community who cares so much.” Thriving Pink board member Dr. Alicia Silva works at Sutter Hospital, and volunteers her time to lead Thriving Pink’s ProspeROSA community gatherings in Woodland and other parts of Yolo County to distribute important breast cancer resource materials from Thriving Pink in Spanish, including applications for financial assistance through individual grants. “I see the great need in this community. I immigrated to this country as a young child from Mexico, and graduated from UC Davis medical school. “My heart is in this community, and I’m honored to provide bilingual support and help with outreach to our diverse communities.” Yolo County has the third highest poverty rate in the state of California. In Yolo County, a third of the population are Hispanic /Latino, and 1 in 5 households struggle financially being below the poverty level. (2020 Census Data). “‘No Te Dejes’ is a phrase we embrace because it means ‘Don’t Give In.’ Keep fighting and take care of yourself,” said Dr. Silva “We believe in the power of community. And we are connecting many newly diagnosed women to Thriving Pink workshops, support groups, financial grants and Pink Peers.” The generosity of our community sustains our community outreach and core programs. To volunteer, find support for someone newly diagnosed with breast cancer, or make a donation to Thriving pink, please visit www.thrivingpink.org or email info@thrivingpink.org . - Letter: Stand Up To Cancer In October
< Back Letter: Stand Up To Cancer In October LETTER TO THE EDITOR Sep 6, 2023 The month of October is upon us, evoking images of fall leaves, Halloween celebrations, and ... Pink Ribbons. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and, for those of us who have been diagnosed with breast cancer, this can be a challenging time with frequent reminders of our diagnoses. I experience conflicting emotions throughout the month. I find it exhausting at times to hear about breast cancer. I feel sad that, in the 15 years since my diagnosis, the incidence of breast cancer has increased. I'm frustrated that my daughter must also live with the risk of a breast cancer diagnosis. Yet I also experience hope for the incredible medical advances being made and appreciation for the amazing level of support that is demonstrated here each October: pink window clings hanging in businesses, city council proclamations, community fundraisers, breast cancer awareness walks, and volunteer-led events. I am reminded that I live in a caring community and am not alone on my journey. I chair the board of Thriving Pink, a nonprofit that supports the breast cancer community. While we rally each October to increase awareness, fighting and thriving with breast cancer is not about an event that occurs once a year. We are there 7 days a week, 365 days a year, in real and tangible ways, offering financial aid, peer mentorship, education, and a community of empowerment, resilience, and hope. This October, we hope you'll join us in support of the breast cancer community. Reach out to us at info@thrivingpink.org or www.thrivingpink.org . Joni Rubin Previous Next

< Back Thriving Pink: Pinktober gratitude SPECIAL TO THE ENTERPRISE Nov 28, 2022 During National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, the Thriving Pink team of dedicated supporters and board members reached out to many individuals and businesses in Yolo County. The volunteer-driven organization, which is led by many breast cancer survivors/thrivers, wants to ensure the local nonprofit will continue to grow and sustain its core services and programs. In October this year, over 140 individuals and businesses in Yolo County participated in and donated to the PINKtober outreach campaign for Thriving Pink. Local businesses have been particularly generous knowing that 100% of the donations will stay in this community to directly help local breast cancer survivors. “I was not even old enough for a mammogram when I was diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in March 2021. I had moved here from the east coast, away from my family, and found a lump during a self-exam. In the past eighteen months, I went through surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. I am thankful for Thriving Pink and the great support from this community,” said Tatum Clinton-Selin, a Thriving Pink grant recipient. “Thriving Pink’s mentoring program and their Pink Speaker Series workshops led by medical professionals are unparalleled among breast cancer organizations.” “It is truly heart-warming to see so many generous individuals and businesses making a difference to help local breast cancer survivors thrive,” shares Leslie Hunter, Executive Director of Thriving Pink. “As a community owned grocery store, the customers of the Davis Food Co-op truly care about how their money positively impacts their neighbors,” said Vince Marchese, Marketing Manager Davis Food Co-op. “It is important for us, during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, to show our support through the Round Up at the Register program to raise money for Thriving Pink’s programs to help local breast cancer patients and survivors.” Jeremy Brooks of Brooks Painting shares, “Giving back is one of our company’s core values. All of our team members step up to support Thriving Pink. We personally know many who have benefitted from this wonderful organization.” A gift to Thriving Pink is truly a gift our local community. FIT House, Balance Point Pilates, Get Fit Davis, and Jazzercise Davis were among many local businesses which hosted class fundraisers for the worthy cause. “We believe Thriving Pink is an incredibly important resource for the women of Yolo County impacted by a diagnosis of breast cancer, as well as for their families,” said Stephanie Tooker Jordan, Jazzercise Davis Owner and Instructor. We are truly grateful for the many individuals and local businesses who have recently given so generously through our PINKtober fundraising campaign to support Thriving Pink’s services and programs for our breast cancer community. The Granting Pink Program, led by a committee with Rose Cholewinski of SwimAmerica Davis, provides financial assistance with individual grants to directly support local survivors with medical treatment and quality of life care. The Thriving Pink team appreciates all the dedicated volunteers and supporters who make this all possible. “Thriving Pink is also expanding its programs, workshops, and partnerships, over the next few months, with a new Office & Community Room located at 501 2 nd Street in Davis downtown,” says Joni Rubin. “This beautiful space donated by Harris Liu, owner of Woodland McDonald’s, provides a home for our community, and ensures local donations directly help our breast cancer community of survivors and thrivers.” Thriving Pink’s programs and workshops are provided at no cost to the community.
